Artist and maker based in Vancouver, B.C.

Matt Monroe is an artist and furniture designer who creates handcrafted, custom made furniture and large-scale, sculpture-based installations.

Matt worked for acclaimed American furniture company, BDDW in NYC, where he built their high-end wood furniture, before going on to receive an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, Michigan.

Matt’s company, Monroe Workshop, creates unique pieces of furniture for residential, commercial and hospitality clients that include Ace Hotels, Eileen Fisher stores, Commune Design, and Reath Design. His work is featured in Dwell Magazine and Architectural Digest.

In his art practice, Matt combines his technical skill as a designer and fine craftsperson with his playful artistic vision, which results in whimsical pieces that evoke emotion through altered objects and contrived experiences. His works often illuminate something in the world around us either by activating it with unexpected motion or by creating it out of unexpected materials.

Matt has shown his art work in New York, Detroit, Buffalo, New Mexico, Colorado, Chicago, Los Angeles and Vancouver.

He currently lives in North Vancouver with his family and two dogs.
